Parent page
The links in the sub-menus will take you to three places. The first is an explanation of the range of multidigit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division strategies and algorithms work. We all learned that there was just one way to do things. It turns out that that is not true. There is a diversity of strategies that rely on slightly different mathematical ideas. Knowing how to solve a computational task more than one way means you have a stronger number sense, are more nimble with numbers, and flexible in your thinking. The underlying algebraic properties also rise to the surface for students to contemplate and comprehend. Several of the strategies described are what we might call mental math strategies. What is described is how those strategies look like on paper.
The second sub-menu page takes you to descriptions of card games to play with your child. Many are for primary students but several can be extended and adapted for older students. Make at Ten is one of those useful strategies to have under one’s belt as it is essential when working fluently with multidigit numbers. The games are also translated in Spanish.
The final link is to websites that have materials for children that I have found to be reliable.
